Games on the Rise: Race the Sun

As an industry veteran at Raven Software, Aaron San Filippo had worked on a number of AAA titles including (but not limited to) Singularity, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.  After seeing an opportunity in the indie space, he decided to partner with his brother, Forest, to create Flippfly — a studio dedicated to creating games that are new, fun, honest, and clean.

The duo’s latest venture is with their action-platformer/racer, Race the Sun.  This Star Fox-esque title has been in a playable state on Kongregate since the middle of last September, but Flippfly recently launched a Kickstarter to support the game in new ways.  With a $20,000 goal, Aaron and Forest hope to achieve the ability to give Race the Sun a proper release and implement a host of new features, including mod tools, multiplayer, and a focus on community.

Race the Sun will feel familiar to fans of the “runner” genre, where each successive attempt builds upon the last and allows for new unlocks, power-ups, and other gameplay features.  The unique region differentiation and increased gameplay length over time will keep players wanting to come back for more, while the simplistic-yet-stark art style and ease of control only complement a desire to keep playing the game.

Kickstarter may be saturated with a huge number of projects, but Race the Sun deserves to be one of its success stories.  With 22 days to go, Flippfly needs around $18,000 to meet their goal.  If you are looking to an alternative, unique runner-game with a slew of potential features and yearn for the Star Fox days of yore, do yourself a service and contribute to this project.
