Square Enix is not only coming to E3 2019, but they’re taking the primetime spot that Sony once occupied. That bold move has led some to believe that this year’s presentation will be more exciting than the studio’s recent conferences.
We’re not sure if that will be the case, but we do think that there are a few announcements that will likely be made during Square Enix’s E3 show. Specifically, we think that you should expect to see the following five reveals.
Final Fantasy VII Remake Release Date
It’s been 4 years since Final Fantasy VII‘s remake went into production, and it’s been much longer than that since we first heard of this game. Since then, FF VII Remake updates have been few and far between. Needless to say, this has caused a great deal of frustration among a fanbase that has been eagerly awaiting this ambitious project.
This feels like the year we finally get a release date. Unless this remake will skip this generation (which is possible) or be canceled entirely (highly unlikely), we’re reaching the point of no return. At the very least, expect to see more FF VII Remake than we ever have before.
The Avengers Game Update
Yes, Square Enix is working on an Avengers game. You probably forgot about it considering that it was first revealed via a brief teaser years ago and hasn’t been talked about much since. Some have gone so far as to speculate that the game may have been quietly cancelled.
We don’t think that’s the case, but it’s really hard to say for sure at this point. Whatever is happening, expect to get an update on this game at E3 2019. That also means that if Square Enix doesn’t show or talk about this game at E3, we can safely assume that something horrible has happened and you shouldn’t have this game on your radar anymore.
Octopath Traveler 2 Release Date
The original Octopath Traveler wasn’t a perfect game, but it was a fascinating blend of retro and modern that scratched some serious JRPG itches. It also apparently sold quite well as Square Enix is bringing it to PC and has already confirmed they are working on a sequel.
Based on what’s been said so far, you should expect to hear a release date for Octopath Traveler at E3. That release date may be as soon as late 2019, but 2020 sounds more likely.
A New Switch Exclusive
There was a time when Square Enix and Nintendo had a somewhat rocky relationship, but they’re back to being best friends these days. Octopath Traveler showed that Square Enix is even willing to develop Switch exclusives (at least timed exclusives).
While there’s nothing specific out there that indicates that we’re getting another Switch exclusive from Square Enix, it does feel like we’re “due” for one. Specifically, we think that they’re going to test a new IP on Nintendo’s console due to the fact that a new game still has a better chance of being seen on Switch.
People Can Fly’s New Shooter
People Can Fly (the developers of Painkiller and Bulletstorm) are working on a new game. What game? We…umm…don’t know.
So far, everyone close to the project has been quiet regarding what it is, but we think that will change at E3 2019. It’s been just long enough since the confirmation of the project to get some kind of update on the game. While we expect that this will be an IP, don’t be surprised if Square Enix acquired some classic franchise.
